Where should you place backlinks in your notes?

As I see it, it depends on what you intend to use your note for. If you intend to use your notes only inside your note-taking system and for, I would argue that they are better placed in the actual text.

Personally, though, I want my notes to be atomic and self-contained and easy to extract from my note book and integrate into my writing projects. Having backlinks inside the actual text of the note doesn.
